Effectiveness of tightness and practicality of use

I used this device for the closure of multiple craniotomies at the Neurosurgery of the Hospital of Alessandria and at the Clinical Neurosurgery of the Spedali Civili of Brescia and I found the effectiveness of tightness and practicality of use. The device can be implanted both along the craniotomy line and in the holes, thanks to its two-in-one configuration.

Simple and intuitive positioning techniques

In general, the use of NtCranial® guaranteed a satisfactory reconstruction of the skull with correct realignment of the bone flap and good stability of the construct, assessed intraoperatively. Positioning technique appeared simple and intuitive, quick and far from complication during placement of the device.

Easy to use

NtCranial® is a 100% polymeric device and doesn’t require complex instruments for implantation: the positioning is made by hand with an intuitive “pull and tighten” movement, and the only tool required is a dedicated cutter used to remove the excess part of the device. NtCranial® is radiolucent, artifact-free and can be used both in the craniotomy line and in the burr hole.

Good aesthetic result

After six months from the surgery, the stability was still satisfactory. From the aesthetic point of view, no evidence of the device under the skin was found and no complaint by the patients was collected, as a proof to the slim profile. The global feedback about the device provided by the surgeon scored an average value of 4,4 out of 5.

No artifacts reported

The evaluation about the ease of use of NtCranial® provided positive feedbacks. In the routine post-surgery CT and MRI imaging no artifacts were reported. No postoperative infections, allergies or inflammations were recorded. No postoperative hemorrhage requiring a new surgical procedure was found. None of the patients experienced a bone flap dislocation in the postoperative stage.

Satisfactory stability of the cranial flap

In all the cases, the surgeon could obtain a satisfactory stability of the cranial flap at the end of the surgery, with neither dislocation nor undesired displacements. Three or two devices were implanted by hand in each surgery, without difficulties or material breakage. The closure time was usually approx. 2 min, consistently with the results obtained in the preclinical tests.

A safe and quick device for an effective cranial refixation

NtCranial® is a new PEEK-based device for cranial flap refixation after craniotomy. In this paper 11 case studies have been collected. NtCranial® has been implanted according to the instructions for use, and after the surgery the patients underwent routine manual palpation and CT/MRI scans to assess the stability of the flap. Record of possible adverse events was made. In all the cases the stability of the flap and the aesthetic result were optimal. No imaging artifacts have been observed. No complications occurred. Although this is a very preliminary analysis, NtCranial® showed to be a safe and quick device to perform an effective cranial refixation.
